(continued)People have no idea how far kindness gets them. For example, without ever asking or even remotely hinting at anything, people at a Burger King started recognizing me by what I ordered, greeting me with huge smiles, starting mini conversations, and would toss in tons of extras into my bag. Not only that, they made it a point to never fuck up my order.

Same goes with Subway. All I'd do is ask them something simple and atypical as they would make my sandwich, like "how's your day been?" I'd listen, respond appropriately, and be sure to say tons of pleases and thank you's. In no time flat, people remember what you want, soon after, they remember what you get on it, and to top it all off, they start giving you discounts and at one subway I used to go so often, the employees would basically give me my sandwhich for free (they'd tear off long strips of the SubClub stamps and sneak them to me, which means I would get a 12-inch for only a buck). Sometimes, they'd completely give me my sandwich for free (eg, if they had free food for their shift). It was ridiculous.

Though, I don't want to sound like the only reason for being nice is monetary; though, for the fucks who will only do something nice if it means an extra penny in their pockets, it might be something for them to consider. I do it because I know the shit they have to deal with, and as a result, I want to completely defy their expectations. I'll do everthing I mentioned even if I expect or even know that I'll never return to a certain place-- just so long as the staff isn't comprised of total bastards.

Plus, what does it really cost me? What do people think to themselves to keep them from being nice to other people? "Oh! Heaven forbid I actually have to make smalltalk in my pseudo-busy day! What a nightmare! My life this, my life that, and to top it all off, my favorite singer got eliminated on American Idol!" ... whatever.

I'm of the firm belief that the day one stops being nice to his fellow humans, no matter if he expects something in return or not, is the day when one should know that he's become a selfish prick who does nothing good for the world outside of his self-contained sphere. On that day, the individual has become the problem, and no longer the solution.

... oh yeah, and you might just find yourself with your face covered in boiling-hot grease, and nobody will give a shit, `cause you're a selfish prick that nobody cares about because you care about nobody.
